Renting a trailer when moving

Renting a reliable trailer offers more than just flexibility – it’s a smart way to manage your move and cut down on expenses. By choosing a rental trailer over a full-service moving company, you could save up to R15,000, depending on the size and distance of your move.

While you might end up with a sore back, the control and cost savings are well worth it.

But with so many trailer rental options available, how do you pick the right one? You might think, “A trailer is a trailer,” but the truth is, not all rental companies are created equal.

Since, we’re in Randburg, we usually rent this trailer from Randburg Trailer Rental. It’s a 3.5-meter trailer and available at +/- R320 per day.

Their trailers are always in excellent condition, showing their dedication to your safety and their commitment to long-term service for you, their customer.

Here are some tips:

  1. It’s not advisable to handle a long-distance move, such as relocating from Gauteng to Cape Town, on your own. The potential savings are minimal compared to the challenges and risks involved.
  2. Load mattresses first, this will also give you cushioning in trailers, and you will need it to sleep at the new place, if it is a long-distance trip. Bed shop might be closed by the time you choose to go to the shops.
  3. Consider the dimensions of doorways and hallways at both the old and new properties to avoid complications during the move. It’s a pain carrying a large item all the way to the back of the house in a narrow hallway, then having to take it back, because it didn’t fit.
  4. Start by moving the larger items first. This not only helps you gauge the size requirements and spacing in the new rooms but also reduces the time needed for the trailer rental. Once the big pieces are in place, you can easily transport the smaller items in your own car.
  5. Disassemble large items like beds, tables, and shelving units to make them easier to move and fit in the trailer.
  6. Use blankets, bubble wrap, or moving pads to protect furniture and appliances from scratches and dents during transit.
  7. Keep chords in devices and appliances, that way they don’t get mixed up, or go missing along the way.
  8. Load the heaviest items, like refrigerators or sofas, at the front of the trailer to keep the weight balanced. (Watch a few videos about load balancing and weight distribution on or in a trailer, to prevent swaying while driving. Trust me)
  9. A dolly or hand truck can make moving heavy appliances much easier and reduce the strain on your back.
  10. Plan your driving route to avoid tight corners, narrow streets, or low bridges that might be challenging with a trailer.
  11. Allow extra time for driving slower, especially if you’re unfamiliar with towing.
  12. Inspect the trailer for any issues, such as tire pressure, lights, and hitch security, before loading your items.
  13. Make sure the trailer is roadworthy and can carry the weight to prevent any breakdowns during the move.
  14. Take turns slowly and give yourself extra time for increased stopping distance to accommodate the extra weight of the trailer.
